A Analysis of Seopcheonsa(àñô¸ÞÍ)¡¯s Stomach-Eum[êÖëä] Theory and Dangjonghae(ÓÐðóú)¡¯s Spleen-Eum[Þ¡ëä] Theory
Chough Won-Joon

Abstract
Seopcheonsa(àñô¸ÞÍ) regarded the cause of Stomach-Eum[êÖëä] deficiency as the lack of fluid and humor induced the heat by Eum(ëä, yin) deficiency constitution, external pathogen, overexertion and fatigue, misused medication etc. He said that the symptoms of Stomach-Eum deficiency was related to indigestion of food and that it induced the short supply of nutrition for the whole body and the symptoms by disabled Earth[÷Ï]-engenders-Metal[ÑÑ]. He presented the treatment of clearing Stomach-Fire[êÖæð] and nourishing Stomach-Eum[êÖëä], and used Geumgwemaekmundongtang(ÑÑ?ØêÚ¦ÔÏ÷·). And he emphasized Stomach-Eum to supplement existing Spleen-Yang[Þ¡åÕ] centered treatment. Dangjonghae(ÓÐðóú) regarded Spleen-Eum[Þ¡ëä] as these, first, it was fluid and humor such as digestive enzyme. Secondly, it was nutritive substance itself. Finally, it contained plaster-oil and blood-agglutination which formed flesh with nutritive substance. Seopcheonsa and Dangjonghae both thought that fluid and humor was necessary to digest food. However, Dangjonghae¡¯s Spleen-Eum[Þ¡ëä] included nutritive substance as the result of digestion. So we can say that Dangjonghae integrated Spleen-Eum with Stomach-Eum and Spleen-nutrient.
